ENCAP symposium at the Euregio Rhine-Waal

Awareness of the impact of compulsive feeding on professionals is important to improve the treatment of anorexia patients.

In collaboration with the German LVR clinics, Karakter conducted a study on the impact of force-feeding in anorexia nervosa on professionals. Psychiatric professionals from Germany and the Netherlands were interviewed. The results of the study were presented at a symposium in Kleve, Germany. The symposium once again highlighted the importance of cross-border dialogue between science and practice for the future of healthcare.

Although the situations are different, the interviews show that the experiences of professionals in Germany and the Netherlands are comparable. The administration of force-feeding has an enormous emotional impact on professionals and others involved - not least the patients themselves. There is an urgent need for research into alternatives. There is also a need for more time, attention and processing support from practitioners and teams. All of this ultimately benefits patients.
