Closer to the labour market by overcoming borders

The labour market is tight in both the Netherlands and Germany: There are many vacancies and fewer jobseekers. In order to contribute to a more inclusive Euregional labour market and counteract the shortage of skilled workers, the GrenzTalentFit project, which was officially launched at the beginning of 2025, focuses on reaching people who are far removed from the labour market.

They have potential that needs to be recognised. However, the reintegration and social and participation of this group, which is fundamentally capable of working, requires support from various authorities. In the border region of the Kleve district and the Netherlands, this is the task of the towns and municipalities. In the Interreg project GrenzTalentFit, the Kleve District Vocational Training Centre is working together with the Gemeente Lingewaard, the RSD de Liemers and the job centres of the towns of Emmerich am Rhein and Kleve. They are active on a practical and methodological level.

Firstly, the project partners are concentrating on reaching and activating people with a greater distance to the labour market. These people with complex problems are not reached via the regular, formal contact channels, as they perceive these as alien to their lives. The participating job centres and local authorities have therefore opted for a cross-border, holistic and outreach approach that complements existing working methods. As part of the project, people furthest from the labour market are actively sought out and motivated to take part in workshops to improve their life situation. The aim is to stabilise the participants and increase their experience of self-efficacy. The stabilisation of individual living conditions not only has great benefits for those involved, but also reduces the social costs associated with long-term unemployment.

Parallel to the activities for and with the participants who are far from work, cross-border meetings will be held for the involved and interested specialist advisors and employees of the participating job centres, social services, municipalities and institutions. The exchange of methodological and operational knowledge will enable the experts to develop new perspectives and solutions and make optimum use of the expertise on both sides of the border. The project is open to the participation of other organisations and municipalities responsible for this topic. As a concrete result of the cooperation at this level, methods for promoting the situation of people furthest from the labour market will be summarised and made available. In addition, the project partners are developing a plan for an exchange platform to continue synergies and knowledge exchange beyond the end of the project.

The kick-off event of this project will take place on Wednesday 18 June in Kasteel Doornenburg (NL). If you have any questions about the kick-off, please contact: grenztalentfit@bbz-kleve.de

The project will run for three years and ends in February 2028, with a total budget of €1,123,463.64 available for this period. The project partners are making a contribution of €324,011.06. An amount of €799,452.58 is being co-financed by the EU, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Province of Gelderland as part of the Interreg Germany-Nederland programme.
