Organisation

The Euregio Rhine-Waal is a German-Dutch public body. The highest committee of the Euregio Rhine-Waal is the Euregio Council. All 54 member organisations (municipalities, cities, chambers of commerce) are represented in this Council. The Euregio Council consists of 120 members. The Euregio Council chooses a chairman and a deputy chairman from among its members. They have alternately Dutch and German nationality. The Executive Board of the Euregio Rhine-Waal consists of seven members who are chosen from the Euregio Council once every four years. There are three committees consisting of members of the council and also of expert representatives of the member organisations and other bodies that advise on particular themes such as e.g. economics or agriculture.

Finances

The Euregio Rhine-Waal is financed by contributions from its members, the German federal state Nordrhein-Westfalen and the Dutch provinces Gelderland, North-Brabant and Limburg. Within the scope of the INTERREG IIIA programme, Euregio Rhine-Waal receives funds from the European Union and the Ministries of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands and in Nordhrein-Westfalen. The cost of the EURES (European Employment Services) programme is largely borne by the European Commission.

History

The Euregio Rhine-Waal took up its activities as a loose association of town, cities and organisations in 1968, formally constituting the Euregio Council in 1978. Since than there have been major developments in the Euregio Rhine-Waal. In 1993 The Euregio Rhine-Waal was the first Euregio in Europe to become a public authority, based on the Treaty of Anholt between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Federal Republic of Germany. 

Objective Euregio Rhine-Waal

Stimulating European integration by building up structural cooperation in the German-Dutch border region around the rivers Rhine, Waal and Maas.

Activities & Themes

The responsibilities of Euregio Rhine-Waal are divided into the following main groups:

· Consulting between the Dutch and German members and gearing policy to one another.
· Promoting the interest of the border region and its inhabitants with national and European authorities.
· Advising and supporting citizens, institutions and companies in their German-Dutch contacts, activities and questions.
· Developing, supporting and implementing cross-border projects.
· Providing information about cross-border themes.
· Managing European programmes for the border regions.

INTERREG IIIA

The Euregio Rhine-Waal supports projects in the fields of:

· Spatial structure.
· Economic development, technology and innovation.
· Environment nature and landscape.
· Education and labour market.
· Social integration.

· Coordination for the Euregio Rhine-Waal and euregio rhine-maas-north

Members

54 Dutch and German municipalities, regional authorities and bodies. On the German side, it encompasses the districts of Wesel, Kleve and the town of Duisburg. On the Dutch side, it covers parts of the provinces of Limburg, North-Brabant and Gelderland, including the towns of Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Location

The Euregio Rhine-Waal has its office in Haus Schmithaus in Kleve. The information centre for citizens, businesses, authorities and other bodies can also be found here.
